Today, threats to democracy in the U.S. and around the world are threatening to erode or even erase centuries of hard-won civil rights and democratic traditions. Here at Antioch University, we have spent the last 172 years acting on the belief that colleges and universities play an important role in sustaining and strengthening democracy. In this critical time, we feel it is our duty both to speak out and to take tangible action to support democracy. That’s why Antioch University is stepping forward with an institution-wide initiative of education and action to strengthen democracy.

We’re calling this Antioch Works for Democracy (AW4D) 2024. This non-partisan initiative consists of six pillars: voting, speaking out, educating each other, sharing information, organizing university-community initiatives, and volunteering. We invite all Antiochians to learn more about AW4D—and to come together to defend and strengthen our democracy.

Vote for Democracy

Through a partnership with TurboVote, a national nonpartisan organization, we are offering a tool to help Antiochians register to vote. It is open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the country—an Antioch email address is not required.

Voices for Democracy

We are publishing a wide range of stories and voices aligned with the themes of Antioch Works for Democracy. Central to this effort are monthly statements from Antioch’s Chancellor, stories highlighting the work of Antiochians across the country and world, and personal essays from our community.

Resources for Democracy

We are gathering resources around democracy, including print, digital, and video media, an aggregated list of organizations, and information about democracy.

Education for Democracy

We are welcoming a robust line-up of keynote speakers, panel discussions, and readings on democracy. For current students and employees we are also hosting six Antioch Book Conversations for Democracy.

Days of Action for Democracy

All Antioch employees will have the opportunity to volunteer their time during approved work hours, up to one day per month, to act for democracy through civic engagement and public works, community education activities, and helping with electoral processes.

Fund for Democratic Initiatives

Antioch’s Chancellor has established a fund to support our campuses, schools, programs, and other university units in creating university-community initiatives that enhance Antioch’s civic engagement through community-based education and action, training in civic skills,  collaborative research, scholarship that furthers our understanding of inclusive democracy, and more.
