MEd for Experienced Educators, Teaching and Learning

Let us help you thrive in your first years in the classroom.

Schools are faced with a teacher shortage of crisis proportions, and you’ve chosen to be part of the solution. Becoming a teacher while working in a classroom is a challenging process, but we know it can be inspiring as well. As a non-traditional or alternative licensure candidate, you hold an undergraduate degree, but you want more support as you fulfill the teaching requirements of your school-based licensure program. We’ll meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.

This degree is offered by Antioch University’s New England Campus.

Program Overview

teaching working with students with a model molecule

The MEd in Teaching and Learning is specially designed for teachers who are pursuing or have completed alternative licensure and/or who wish to deepen their skills as practitioners after having completed an alternative licensure process. Specific coursework will be determined based on student needs as defined by the site-based or alternative licensure process, student reflection, and advisor and school mentor guidance. Students may transfer in up to 8 credits with advisor approval.

Additional Information

This program can be completed in 5-7 semesters with fully online and low residency options available. Students can begin in any semester and typically take 3-6 credits per term; students must successfully complete a total of 33 credits.

Our small, fully online courses combine the flexibility of online learning with the community and collegiality you crave. You’ll learn with educators from all over the world, creating new expertise via experiential learning, application of new ideas, and creation of new tools and strategies. Classes focus on both theoretical and practical exploration, impacting your teaching in both the short and long term. Most importantly, we realize that our students are working professionals with busy lives, so we work with you to make the best use of your time and meet your individual learning goals.

If you choose to come to a summer residency instead of doing your program fully online, you can expect one or two weeks of a retreat-like experience in beautiful Keene, NH. Small classes offer lots of hands-on activities, community-based learning opportunities, and a socially engaging week of meeting with your online classmates and AUNE  faculty. In most concentrations, you can choose whether to attend face-to-face classes for either one or two weeks in the summer, and you don’t have to decide in advance. You can consult with your adviser and see what fits your schedule and learning style best.

Summer Residency Courses are held the first two full weeks of July following the week of the Fourth of July holiday- typically the first and second or second and third weeks of the month. Depending on your program, you can attend for the first or second week or come for both weeks.

Graduates of the Teaching and Learning concentration will have the following:

  • Reflected upon one’s own experiences as a student in order to build upon the strengths and challenges of that experience in modern contexts.
  • Identified growing edges in one’s own pedagogy via either one’s site-based licensure programs and/or as a result of one’s own reflection and feedback from mentors.
  • Demonstrated competency in the areas identified as “growing edges”
