About Colby Smith

Dr. Smith Received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Muskingum College in 1965, his master’s degree in higher education and counseling from Ohio State University in 1967, and his doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. Dr. Smith has also trained in organization development with the National Training Laboratories in Bethel, Maine. He has served as an executive officer of the Western Massachusetts/Albany Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology, Local Chapter, Division of Psychoanalysis (39), American Psychological Association.

Dr. Smith began teaching at Antioch University New England in 1977 and is one of the founding members of the Department of Clinical Psychology. His particular interests involve the application of psychoanalytic thinking to issues of countertransference in psychotherapy. He has also been a member of a psychoanalytic research group on unconscious communication. Dr. Smith has applied his interests in object relations theory to issues of containment and safety in supervision and training. He was co-developer of the Professional Seminar model of training and has been co-author of several training papers for the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP). Dr. Smith has presented his work on object relations theory and supervision throughout New England. He also has been a consultant to numerous practitioners, especially with regard to the development of private practices and alternative systems of service delivery.

Incorporated in Dr. Smith’s work is a focus on the role of psychologists in their local communities. He is a licensed psychologist in Massachusetts. He has a private practice of psychotherapy and supervision in Amherst, Massachusetts.
