Antioch Seattle
Diversity Council
Race and Equity Center
About
Diversity Council works to ensure that diversity, expressed in various forms, remains integral to excellence at Antioch University Seattle.
Composed of faculty, staff, and students from across all academic and administrative units, the Council endeavors to act on our institutional and community values to becoming an anti-racist, intersectional, and equitable culture on our campus where every member of the community, regardless of race, religion, gender, disability status or socio-economic status, can thrive.
The Diversity Council enhances our institutional capacity to develop and implement effective diversity work across the campus. The Council recommends strategic initiatives for achieving diversity and inclusion goals and works collaboratively across the campus to build and carry out the diversity plan.
Members serve for two years and are expected to attend and actively participate in meetings, act as liaisons for their programs, and monitor progress on campus diversity initiatives.
Who We Are
Diversity Council members are asked to incorporate their understanding of anti-racist, intersectional, and equitable diversity-related concerns within their programs and departments to inform the work of the Council. Additionally, members are responsible for reporting back to their chairs, programs, and colleagues and ensuring that the current work of the Diversity Council is circulated widely within their programs and departments.

National Heritage Months and Cultural Recognitions
AUS honors our diverse community by acknowledging national heritage months, days, and cultural recognition throughout the year. This list is ever-growing. These observances provide us with an opportunity to learn about the rich historical, cultural, and societal dimensions of various identities that have often historically experienced marginalization. It also allows us to share our appreciation for their many contributions, which we recognize have often been in the face of historic and systemic exclusion. AUS uplifts the importance of lived experiences and cultural heritages daily.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” Letter from Birmingham, Alabama jail, April 16, 1963
There are so many in the past as well as today who, in the face of what may seem insurmountable odds, stand for justice, equity, and freedom, as well as celebrate their amazing contributions to the world. We encourage you to reach out to each other, talk, learn, share, and put our values and commitments to work.
