Janet Dewart Bell, author, activist, speaker and educator, will read powerful excerpts from Black women’s speeches from the Civil War to today. Whether the words of Sojourner Truth or Barbara Lee, Rosa Parks, or Angela Davis, Black women have been speaking out for a just and inclusive democracy for centuries. In her recently published, Blackbirds Singing: Inspiring Black Women’s Speeches from the Civil War to the Twenty-first Century (2024), Janet shares the voices of 28 prophetic and powerful women speaking out against injustice and speaking up for inclusion.

Please join us for this one-hour reading. Janet will share a bit about how she put this collection together and then share selected excerpts.

Among Janet Dewart Bell’s many accomplishments, she is also an Antioch alum, securing her BA from Antioch, Maryland, in 1974 and graduating in 2015 from the Graduate School of Leadership and Change. Janet currently serves as a member of Antioch University’s Board of Governors.

This program is offered with support from Antioch Works for Democracy
