I am an abolitionist teacher and counselor educator. “Abolitionist teaching is the practice of working in marginalized communities while drawing on imagination, creativity, refusal, (re)membering, visionary thinking, healing, rebellious spirit, boldness, and determination” (Love, 2019). It is my intent to create a safe space and community of care that allows students to learn and retain information. Students are honored for their humanity in this cultivated community, where they grow and develop their clinical skills through discussion, independent work, and experiential learning. Teaching, counseling, researching, and cultivating future clinicians is the social justice work for which I am passionate. My teaching philosophy has been created through my professional counseling identity, theoretical orientation, research pursuits, and commitment to social justice and advocacy. I am guided by the practice of andragogy; thus, my approach is developmental and meets each student where they are. I teach from an opportunity-centered lens (Milner, 2019). Ultimately, the work is to engage students in experiential activities that allow me to invest in them both professionally and personally. I draw on the legacies of Black Womanist thought, such as Motherwork, which transforms my philosophy into a nurturing practice.
