Home Faculty Directory Dr. Covia Boyd

My name is Covia M. Boyd. I received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University in 2015. I earned a Master of Science, in Rehabilitation Counseling from Winston-Salem State University in 2005. I am a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Specialist (CSOTS) through Ohio University. I have 20 years of professional counseling experience. I served as Academic Supervisor and Internship Coordinator for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program (CMHC) at Union Institute & University (UIU) for almost 10 years.

My highest academic and professional achievements include working on the 2010 CACREP standards as a Graduate Assistant and securing full CACREP accreditation for the online CMHC program at UIU. My core competencies include cultural competence, pedagogy, diagnosis and treatment, counseling supervision, program development and evaluation, as well sex offender specific interventions, theory and practice of counseling, group counseling, career development, and writing for publication.

I believe that campus inclusion and equity are necessary at all academic levels because every member of the university community deserves to feel included. Inclusion provides safe places for students mentally, physically and emotionally. Student safety is a prime catalyst for student investment, participation, and enjoyment within the classroom setting. These behaviors manifest into improved academics, increased extra-curricular involvement, and student retention. As such, I envision counseling and spiritual-related endeavors that work cooperatively to engage, equip, and enlighten students toward academic, professional, and personal success.
