Percentage of time that could be remote (0-100%): 100% of the work is performed remotely. The student will attend zoom sessions during which the entire Two Hawks Quarterly editorial team meets (2 hours 50 minutes weekly). The student will also attend at least one zoom meeting a week with Deborah Lott and other work/studies. The remainder of the work is done on the publications portal Submittable.com and on the WordPress site for the publication.

Method to assess remote work: The work/study is responsible for reading, commenting on, and voting up or down on submissions, about 20 per week. They do this task on Submittable where the supervisor has full access to their work. The work/study also assigns readings to the student editorial interns and trains them in using Submittable. The work/study also communicates via email with submitters of work for publication. They solicit work from writers/artists they identify through research and help students to solicit work as well. They work on developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading submissions. They prepare work for posting on the WordPress site and actually post the accepted pieces. They publish the issue and then make any corrections required by the authors/faculty advisors. The desired outcomes are: turnaround of submissions of 6 weeks or less; work copyedited to Chicago Manual of Style standards in an expeditious fashion; work posted as soon as it is edited; smooth communication with authors/artists; successful solicitation of new art and writing; seamless and timely publication of the issue; correction of any errors found by authors. Social media promotion of the issue. Also helping to identify readers and run the quarterly LitUp reading series.

Job Description

  • The editorial assistant will be responsible for assisting in preparing and publishing each issue of Two Hawks Quarterly, the undergraduate program’s literary journal.
  • During non-production quarters, this will involve reading submitted works (10 hours/week; communicating with supervisor and fellow students and attending Zoom sessions of Two Hawks Quarterly if at all possible (5 hours); copy-editing and preparing work for posting (5 hours).
  • During production quarters, the work will shift to reading submitted work (4 hours /week); copy-editing in conjunction with supervisor and fellow students (6 hours); posting work to WordPress (8 hours); proofreading posted work (2 hours).
  • These hours are approximate and may shift depending to which tasks are taken on by the journal’s student editors.
  • Most important are tech skills in posting the issue to WordPress.
  • Posting the issue to Word/Press is primarily the responsibility of the work/study student.

Qualifications

  • Technical proficiency with WordPress or similar platform;
  • good critical reading skills;
  • ability to work as a member of a team; familiarity with reading literary works;
  • diplomacy in interacting with authors; openness to learning new skills;
  • problem solving capacity;
  • good upbeat attitude
