Number of Positions: 3 – We currently have three student workers in this position. One worker will be leaving at the end of the summer. A second worker may be leaving at the end of summer or at the end of fall. The volume of submissions for the journal has increased significantly, while the publication is becoming more well-known in the literary community. Workers are doing more outreach to writers. This increase requires additional hours.

Percentage of time that could be remote (0-100%): 100% of the work will be held via online zoom meetings, the Submittable portal, and the WordPress site

Method to assess remote work: Assessment of the work:
– All the work product is available and visible on Submittable and/or WordPress.
– Weekly meeting to set goals and assess progress
– Work studies usually attend the Two Hawks Quarterly editorial meetings weekly

Outcomes:
– Work studies train new student editors
– Assign the readings to the editors
– Manage incoming submissions
– Maintain editorial turnaround time of two months or less
– Correspond with authors
– Post to the WordPress website
– Follow-up with authors

The overall outcome for workers is the production and promotion of a new issue of the literary journal.

Job Description

  • The editorial assistant will be responsible for assisting in preparing and publishing each issue of Two Hawks Quarterly, the undergraduate program’s literary journal.
  • During non-production quarters, this will involve reading submitted works (10 hours/week; communicating with supervisor and fellow students and attending Zoom sessions of Two Hawks Quarterly if at all possible (5 hours); copy-editing and preparing work for posting (5 hours).
  • During production quarters, the work will shift to reading submitted work (4 hours /week); copy-editing in conjunction with supervisor and fellow students (6 hours); posting work to WordPress (8 hours); proofreading posted work (2 hours).
  • These hours are approximate and may shift depending to which tasks are taken on by the journal’s student editors.
  • Most important are tech skills in posting the issue to WordPress.
    Posting the issue to Word/Press is primarily the responsibility of the work/study student.

Qualifications

  • Technical proficiency with WordPress or similar platform
  • Good critical reading skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team; familiarity with reading literary works
  • Diplomacy in interacting with authors; openness to learning new skills
  • Problem solving capacity
  • Good upbeat attitude
